Beginning in 1979, Kababayan’s Pilipino Culture Nights has grown into
one of the largest cultural shows presented here at UCI. Before moving
to the current venue, the Bren Events Center, past PCNs were held in
venues across the UCI campus including Crawford Hall, Gateway Commons,
and the Barclay Theatre. Some of the past PCNs include “In this
corner” in 2002, “Bumalik sa Simula” in 2005, and “The Lines that
Strengthen” in 2009. Each show presents a different issue/theme that
are important to the Filipino-American community. Kababayan’s culture
nights have been regarded for its quality and its innovation, and was
recently awarded for the Best Multicultural Programming in 2010 for
the PCN entitled “Speak”.
There have been many changes within the program of Kababayan’s PCNs to
make it the show it is today. These changes include the addition of
live commercials (1980’s), the traditional suite and the senior suite
(1990’s), and the modern suite also known as Kaba Modern (1992). There
have also been several name changes to certain suites including: The
Igorot suite was renamed into “Kordilyera” (2000’s), and the Muslim
suite was renamed into the “Moro” suite (2008). The most recent change
came this year with the inclusion of “American” in the title, changing
the name to Pilipino-American Culture Night. This change came as a
realization that each year the show has been increasing been
showcasing more Filipino-American culture, most notably within the
modern suite, choir suite, senior suite, commercials, and the skit.
With each change and addition to Kababayan’s cultural nights its
leaders have been continually exploring different ways to express
Filipino/Filipino-American culture.
With each new year new leaders are able to present different issues,
and dances that reflect the membership. This year we are proud to
present a musical that focuses on the issue of adoption and
Filipino-American identity. With new members entering every year and
older ones graduating, Kababayan’s Pilipino American Cultural Night
creates a unique opportunity for FIlipino-American students at UCI.
Due to the shifting nature of Filipino/Filipino-American identity each
of our cultural nights is true a unique production that reflects the
experiences and hard work of every cast member of that year. Aside
from the cast members, the community here at UCI, and many other
audience members that have come here today, is given a chance to learn
and enjoy the traditional Filipino dances, the singing of the choir,
and the issues explored in the narrative. Through our annual cultural
nights both the cast and audience are exposed to different
Filipino/Filipino American issues, traditions, culture, and history.
